Why do older dogs have more cancer, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, etc.?

Cancer happens naturally with age. The longer a dog lives, the higher the chance of cancer. Period. It's the same with humans. We have an "epidemic" of cancer now because humans are living longer than they ever did.

Diabetes and heart disease are because people treat their dogs like furniture that exists to greet them when they come home, not like active beings who need lots of exercise every day. If the dogs are lucky they have a yard to run in. If they're unlucky, the grudging owner gives them a fifteen minute walk for the purposes of elimination. The dogs get obese and stressed and sick.

There's nothing a "holistic" or "homeopathic" veterinarian can offer your dog that you can't do for yourself. Get off the couch and take him for a run every day. Don't overfeed or give scraps from the table. Give clean water. Feed high quality, low-carbohydrate foods. See a veterinarian for check-ups.

The author of this article isn't a veterinarian. VND is not the same as DVM. Naturopathic "veterinarians" cannot diagnose or treat your dog for anything, cannot dispense medications, cannot do surgery... in short, all they can do is sell you expensive supplements your dog doesn't need and give you dietary advice you should already know. Stick with a DVM.

For the record, wolves (who eat a diet of raw meat and do not take dietary supplements or have holistic veterinarians) have an average life span of 8 years -- just like the domestic dog. The claim of 25-30 year life spans is backed by zero evidence. This woman just wants to exploit your love of your dog to sell you expensive herbal "cleanses" and homeopathic sugar pills. Your dog has a liver. That is all the "cleaning of the blood" he will need for his entire life.
